Practice Passage
Purifying Action Yoga
Austerities, study, and devotion to God are purifying action yoga. Absorption cultivation is its purpose; harms reduction is its purpose as well.
Harms
Ignorance, sense of separate self, craving, aversion, and fear are the five harms. Ignorance is the field for the others, which may be dormant, weakened, at a distance, or active. Ignorance is mistaking the impermanent, impure, and suffering not higher Self for the eternal, pure, and pleasant higher Self. The seer and seeing ability taken to be one thing, seemingly, is sense of separate self. Pleasure follows craving. Pain follows aversion. By its own momentum flowing, in the wise even the same, firmly established is fear. Those when subtle are eliminated by being returned to the source of nature. Meditation eliminates them when fluctuations.
Result of Harms
The harms are the root of the action repository, experienced in seen and unseen births. From the root of that, there is ripening into a kind of life, a lifespan, and experience. Those pleasant and painful fruits are caused by virtue and vice. Impressions, pain, and the qualities fluctuating in opposition result in suffering, so to a discerning person all of those are suffering only. Avoid the suffering yet to come.
Seer and Seen
The seer and the seen merging is to be avoided as the cause. Illumination, activity, and stasis are the natures that the elements and the senses consist of; experience and liberation are the purpose of the seen. With differences, without differences, only signified, and not signified are the states of the qualities. The seer's ability to see is pure even though cognition causes what appears to be seen. That purpose is only for the seeing of the higher Self. Even when the purpose is accomplished regarding cessation, the seen does not cease because for others it is common.
Discernment
Merging causes a master to recognize his powers and the nature of the seen. That is caused by ignorance. Ignorance absent, merging is absent; remove ignorance for seer liberation. The way to remove it is with uninterrupted discerning knowledge. That one has the sevenfold ultimate level of knowledge. Yoga rungs being practiced, impurities are eliminated and knowledge is illuminated up to discerning knowledge.
Rungs
Virtues of self-control, virtues of observance, meditation posture, control of life energy, withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation, and absorption are the eight rungs of yoga.
Virtues of Self-Control
Non-harming, truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity, and non-possessiveness are the virtues of self-control. Not limited by birth, place, time, or circumstance, and in all realms, that is a great vow. Coarse thoughts disturbing, cultivate the opposite. Mild, medium, or intense greed, anger, or delusion precede coarse thoughts, harms, and so forth, which are committed, caused, or consented to and bring the unending fruits of misery and lack of knowledge; therefore cultivate the opposite. Non-harming firmly established, aggression is given up. Non-harming firmly established, aggression is given up. Truthfulness firmly established, the fruits of actions result. Non-stealing firmly established, all treasures appear. Chastity firmly established, vigor is accumulated. Non-possessiveness firmly established, there is knowledge about what causes births.
Virtues of Observance
External and internal purity, contentment, austerities, spiritual study, and devotion to God are the virtues of observance. The lightful element purified brings clarity, one-pointedness, and sense control, as well as higher Self realization preparedness. With contentment, unsurpassed happiness is attained. Body and senses are mastered and impurities eliminated through austerities. Spiritual study brings chosen-deity communion. Absorption is obtained with God devotion.
Posture
Steady and relaxed is meditation posture. The relaxation of tension brings absorption with the eternal. From that dualities cause no suffering.
Control of Life Energy
That accomplished, inhalation, exhalation, and uncontrolled movements are slowed as life force expands. When the external, internal, and suspended fluctuations are regulated by place, time, and number the subtle is extended. The fourth is beyond external and internal realms. From that the veil covering the light is destroyed. It brings concentration and fitness of mind.
Withdrawal of the Senses
The senses not in contact with their own realms and resembling the mind's own form is withdrawal of the senses. From that is the highest control of the organs.
